Packaging Design

To elevate the South African British Airways in-flight meal experience, we were commissioned to design a new packaging system that included self-locking tuck cover lunch boxes, greaseproof paper and safety seals. Spatial efficiency was key to the design, as the solution had to allow for as many boxes as possible to be accommodated in the catering trolley trays. To challenge the industry norm of clinical, unimaginative meal presentation, we added whimsical illustrations of key ingredients and garnishes, using the brand’s iconic red, white and blue corporate colours.

As an extension to the packaging system, we were commissioned to develop a staff empowerment concept, based on a simple sticker system, that would simultaneously instil personal pride and incentivise accountability in the cold kitchen environment, while creating a personal connection between BA customers and the people responsible for their on-board meal preparation.
