Menu design

The Quarterly Reserve is a seasonal mixology showcase hosted by Johannesburg based restaurant and bar The Course, that profiles a premium liquor label through a collection of limited release cocktails. Specially designed by the mixologists at Molecular Bars, the drinks are individually paired with tapas style small plates for an exceptional tasting experience. Closer was commissioned to design menus for collections featuring Patrón, Johnnie Walker, Cîroc, Tanqueray, Don Julio, The Singleton of Dufftown, Haig Club and The Botanist.

Every individual menu was inspired by that quarter’s featured liquor label, with a colour palette and illustration style inspired by, or derived from, the alcohol partner’s respective brand language – lending a completely different personality and atmosphere to each quarterly release. In line with the cocktail pairing menu’s price point, particular emphasis was placed on production quality and finishing techniques.

Alongside the launch of each menu, we were commissioned to promote the offering via social media communication and to develop activation opportunities. The latter included an exclusive twice-monthly mixology masterclass event in which attendees were guided through the basics of bartending by shaking, straining and sipping their way through selected cocktails from that season’s Quarterly Reserve menu.

We were tasked to handle the entire creative process, including creative direction, copywriting, design and production of the printed menus.
